My name is Harvey Milk and I’m here to recruit you!
My name is not Harvey Milk, is Sara Oliveira. And I’ve been recruited, 30 years later by Mr Harvey Milk. After watching Before Stonewall, the documentary about how the gay movement came to be before Stonewall of course, I was astounded at how much I could relate to those people.
Here I am, a 24 years old lesbian in Portugal, and I can still relate to what happened in the USA, almost 80 years ago. It’s sad state of affairs I know.
But after watching Milk, I became aware that I can help change.
Without hope, life’s not worth living.
Truth is, people need to know that the homosexuals do exist. They need to know they know at least one of us. Then I believe that people will understand that we are just like everyone else. Although I disagree that we should make the coming out of other people, I believe we should come out.
About the movie itself, it’s very worth seeing. It’s a very good movie, with fair look on what Mr Milk believed in. Nevertheless, I think the way they made Dan White look, like a Irish simpleton, well, it’s not really that fair.
All men are created equal. No matter how hard you try, you can never erase those words.
